Charity day for South African school
This summer eight Arden Sixth Form students will be travelling to Kwazulu Natal, South Africa for a month. The purpose of this trip is to teach in a rural school, Schitsdrift, which provides education and wider community services for children of poor Zulu families.
The school has improved over the years due to the dedication of Lynette Heron, the owner of a local lodge near the school, and the Knowle and Dorridge Lions. However there is still a struggle to provide basic equipment such as books and stationery and the teachers, who are required to teach in English as this is the universal language, often struggle with the basics of the language. Our purpose is to teach English, Mathematics and other subjects to the children as well as improve the teachers’ use of English within the classroom. The children are willing and eager to learn, this can be seen as they often walk up to 20km to school and back, sometimes barefoot. This vital work is reliant on the generosity of our local community as £16,000 has to be raised to fund the trip.
On Friday 27 March, Arden has agreed to host a non-uniform charity day to help raise funds for the trip. The students have organised multiple events including a chocolate sale, name the Panda, teacher vs student dance off and even leg waxing after school! Hopefully this will be a success and help us raise vital funds towards the trip.
We would like to thank everyone for their continued support to the project, including the Knowle and Dorridge Lions, Arden School and the parents of the students involved in the trip who have supported the fund raising activities.
