GCSE Design & Technology Product Design Focus

architecture, gadgets and innovation?
IIf you are creative and enjoy designing things across a wide range of subjects and materials then
it’s time to consider a GCSE in Product Design. You’ll need a healthy interest in designers of all
kinds and classic design of the past. You must be willing to draw, sketch, model
and make great use of Arden’s excellent ICT facilities.
Successful GCSE Product Designers are highly motivated, organised problem solvers who are able to
work independently under controlled assessment. You need to be innovative and free-thinking with
wideranging interests in Art, Science, Business, ICT, Geography and Social,
Moral, Spirital and Cultural issues.

The Course

The GCSE Design and Technology course involves generating innovative, creative ideas, sketching,
using ICT and Computer- Aided Design and manufacturing, 3D modelling. You’ll be analysing trends
and products and the influence of famous designers and design movements.
Coursework will use a lot of ICT, but students will be required to sketch and model by hand, as
well as using CAD software. Typical coursework products made include stereo amplifiers, various
lighting and storage products.


Assessment

� Design and Technology in the 21st Century:
Written Examination lasting 2 Hours counting
for 50% of the qualification or 100 marks.
� Design and Make Task:
50% of the qualification or 100 marks.
