Local MP talks to Sixth Form students
During Caroline Spelman's visit, Government and Politics students had an opportunity to ask their local MP about issues that affected and interested them. It was enlightening to hear about life in politics and get an insider's viewpoint on Politics in the UK.
She discussed her views on a number of political issues from the rise of UKIP to the role of the UK in Europe. It was particularly interesting to hear her advice on how young people, especially women, can get more involved in politics at a local and national level. She also discussed the particular challenges she faces as MP for Meriden, given its diverse population with a range of political beliefs.
Many of the discussions were based on topics that the group are studying this year as part of their AS-Level, such as electoral reform, the role of the House of Lords and lowering the voting age to sixteen. Her thoughts have sparked a number of debates both in and out of lessons that are excellent preparation for future political studies.
