Year 7 art gallery visit
On Wednesday 5 October, Year 7 pupils enjoyed a very 'hands on' visit to the New Art Gallery, Walsall. The Gallery is a modern and contemporary art gallery sited in the centre of Walsall. It was officially opened by HM The Queen in 2000. The inside of the Gallery consists of six interconnected floors, each with their own character and function. It was designed as an inspirational piece of architecture; the intention was to create ‘a big house’ to be explored and discovered by visitors as they moved between floors.
The gallery staff were very accommodating in supporting our visit offering a wide range of activities to enable the pupils to engage with the artwork. The pupils were able to investigate the gallery’s collection through discussion, writing and drawing activities. We were lucky enough to see the temporary exhibitions of Oliver Jones and Eva Rothschild. Oliver Jones is a British artist who explores ideas of identity and self-image through his artwork. The pupils were given a talk about the work of Eva Rothschild and were able work with a resident artist to create some sculptures inspired by Eva’s work in the gallery.
The pupils had a brilliant day with lots of practical activities as can be seen by the photographs below:
